Have you ever wondered what a dinosaur would do if they roamed the earth today and lived in Scotland? Well thanks to Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland (SBH Scotland), we now know!

The Brief

Based around their existing mascot, SBH Scotland recently launched Spiney the Diney Club, funded by the DM Thomas Foundation for Young People. The club will be one of their cornerstones for early years work, allowing them to engage babies and their families from birth.

The team at Cole AD have worked with SBH Scotland for over 10 years and when we read the brief for the new Spiney the Diney Club, we couldn’t have been more thrilled to be part of this exciting new project!

SBH Scotland asked us to create a brand based around their mascot, Spiney the Diney, for use on club materials.

Our Process

Firstly, we transformed Spiney the Diney into a graphic character to be used on print and promotional materials. As the club is aimed at babies and young children, we wanted to make sure that Spiney was a warm and friendly character that represented their mascot so that he was easily recognisable.

To support the Spiney the Diney character, we created bespoke type to sit alongside Spiney and formed a logo so that they sat together as an emblem. Once this was completed, Spiney the Diney was born! This logo was then transferred onto pale blue t-shirts for every member of the club.

At the launch party all the members received the t-shirt and a Spiney toy along with a folder containing a certificate and children’s book.


It was important that each child felt like part of the Spiney the Diney club, and what better way than to have an official certificate signed by Spiney himself. We designed a bespoke 6 page folder which folds out to reveal Spiney’s paws clutching a certificate and also an illustrated storybook.

SBH Scotland wanted to include a children’s book to give the children an insight into the Spiney character. We were supplied a beautiful story written by SBH Scotland about Spiney the Diney which depicted Spiney’s differences from other dinosaurs but also highlighted the importance of his warm, friendly personality.

We decided to adapt Spiney the Diney into an illustrative, pencil drawn character for the storybook as we felt this would be more engaging. This also allowed us to add a level of flexibility to the character to act out the storyline. The book consisted of 12 illustrated pages and included Spiney’s family and friends too, creating a whole community of dinosaurs!

From initial concepts and ideas to finished printed products, everyone at Cole AD has thoroughly enjoyed working on the Spiney the Diney Club project. We are over the moon that the materials produced have been very well received from the children and their families at the launch party in Rosyth. We wish SBH Scotland and the Spiney the Diney Club all the best for the future!
